Today, Jan 20, is the start of a new Presidency. The Internet captures this historic moment minute by minute. In what ways does the current Internet coverage of history differ from the printed media coverage of the past?

The Internet coverage of this historic event differs tremendously from the old printed media coverage of the past. The biggest factor between the two forms of media is time. If we relied on the old printed media to pass the information around the wolrd, it would take about 3 to 5 weeks before it crossed the Atlantic Ocean. Now with Internet capabilities, information is passed almost instantaneously, even across the Atlantic Ocean.
Another difference between Internet coverage and printed media, is that it saves money and trees. With the capabilities of the Internet, there is no need to print millions of copies of the same article, as you would a news paper. Theoretically with the use of the Internet, you can create one copy of an event, article, documentation, etc. and make it accessible to the world. Besides printed media becomes more of a waste if no one buys it.

Print is a dying media. I watched the inauguration via stream in real life. Afterwards I watched press coverage, read blog opinions, and even had opportunities to publish my own. In the newspaper, I'm seeing one view, one opinion, one perception. I can't see or hear the actual moments. The difference in immersion the two medias offer is vast.

Mainly because of live feeds that are available over the internet. On yesterday, I was able to log on to CNN.com and see the parade live, while my kids watch their cartoons. Years ago we were only able to hear about the events and look at certain pictures that were published in the local paper.

The internet differs from the printed media by being much quicker and more interactive. People today can post their comments in internet blogs for example on CNN. Yahoo's site the day of the inaugauration also gave its visitors the option to post a comment to the President! It is much more inclusive than the media of the past as well as paperless = GREEN!

As You've said previously it allows important news and information to be transferred quickly across long distances within seconds. However it also allows mistakes to be seen quickly as well such as the one word out of sequence made by Chief Justice John Roberts in the inauguration.

The internet has made it easier for people who where not able to watch the event via TV to watch it at a time convent for them. and too be able to see multiple views at anytime they wish. and as other have point out your are able to have more of a personal voice.

The internet acts as a virtual reporter with live coverage. You can actually see the expressions of people other than trying to figure it out from a picture. You can also sometimes tell when they are lying as opposed to reading an article where you can't see the person.
