In 2008, a Brazilian man was charged with selling a network of computers intentionally infected with malicious software. More than 100,000 computers that he attempted to sell contained this software.

The Department of Homeland Security will have to increase its efforts on Critical Infrastructure networks and security. Recent cyber-attacks that have been linked to North Korea and China are a definite threat to National Security. I have read that the Chinese Army has 30,000 computer spies, and much more than that in the civilian sector. Their goal is to enter our networks, find our responses, and log out. This kind of in and out probing enables the spies to keep on step ahead of our security efforts. This is going on while chip manufacturing in China is growing at record pace. Intel is about to open a new plant in China, driving fears that the chips could be manufactured with malware designed to initiate if the chip is placed into a network, and there is also a concern that the chips could be designed with reverse engineering in mind to automatically send weapons data from U.S. systems to the Chinese Army.

In July of 2009, North Korea initiated one of the largest cyber assaults on South Korean and US Forces computer networks.
During a period of four days, South Korean and US computers were shut down in a sophisticated denial of service attack. This was presumed to be a test of network and computer vulnerability, as it seemed there was no missing or stolen data from any of the systems. Thousands of computers on the US and South Korean network were so inundated by a virus that the servers were completely overloaded and had to be shut down. This testing attack was used presumably because it is believed that the US’ weakest point is its defense against cyber terrorism more than any conventional attack.
This particular attack is neither new, nor isolated. Thousands of attacks are committed annually against the United States military networks in attempts to gain access to classified databases, steal data, and disable network capabilities. The importance of our security on the network is not limited to military sites, but the nation as a whole is at risk, as our infrastructure is dependant on digital communications for its operation. Allowing anyone to violate that security either from internal or external sources could create catastrophic damage to our way of life

According to Lance Whitley of CNET.com, few companies are addressing cyber terrorism. Cyber terrorism is on the rise around the world but only one third of companies are seriously doing anything to protect their network systems.
According to the article, the republic of Georgia suffered a series of cyber attacks which shut down several of its key Web sites for more than a week. Georgia blamed forces within Russia for the attacks. U.S. and South Korea were hit with denial service attacks last year in July which prevented people from accessing several government websites.
According to a Wall street report journal, spies from Russia and China have already hacked into our power grid, leaving behind traces of their activity. According to Defense Secretary Robert Gates, the U.S. is under cyber attack almost every day.
This only shows that our vast internetworks needs some kind of protection from cyber terrorists. Research and new technologies must be put in place to minimize or completely repel these kinds of attacks. The Internet might very well be the next battle ground of the century.

I dont know anything about attacks on the internet but that they are very serious and dangerous.
The FBI now considers cyber attacks the third biggest threat to the United Staes behind nucler weapons and weapons of mass desctruction. Shawn Henry a member of the FBIs cyber division has said terrorist are now using cyber attacks to perform a virtual "9/11" on US networks. The biggest problem cyber attacks present is their invisibility.

July 4 hacker attacked U.S goverment sites mainly the white house web site along with south korean goverment sites, the hacker has yet to be find.

The July 2009 cyber attacks were a series of coordinated cyber attacks against major government, news media, and financial websites in South Korea and the United States.[1] The attacks involved the activation of a botnet—a large number of hijacked computers—that maliciously accessed targeted websites with the intention of causing their servers to overload due to the influx of traffic, known as a DDoS attack. Most of the hijacked computers were located in South Korea. The estimated number of the hijacked computers varies widely; around 20,000 according to the South Korean National Intelligence Service, around 50,000 according to Symantec's Security Technology Response group, and more than 166,000 according to a Vietnamese computer security researcher who analyzed the log files of the two servers the attackers controlled.
Why is Cyber Security a Problem?
You've heard the news stories about credit card numbers being stolen and email viruses spreading. Maybe you've even been a victim yourself. One of the best defenses is understanding the risks, what some of the basic terms mean, and what you can do to protect yourself against them.
What is cyber security?
It seems that everything relies on computers and the internet now — communication (email, cellphones), entertainment (digital cable, mp3s), transportation (car engine systems, airplane navigation), shopping (online stores, credit cards), medicine (equipment, medical records), and the list goes on. How much of your daily life relies on computers? How much of your personal information is stored either on your own computer or on someone else's system?
Cyber security involves protecting that information by preventing, detecting, and responding to attacks.
What are the risks?
There are many risks, some more serious than others. Among these dangers are viruses erasing your entire system, someone breaking into your system and altering files, someone using your computer to attack others, or someone stealing your credit card information and making unauthorized purchases. Unfortunately, there's no 100% guarantee that even with the best precautions some of these things won't happen to you, but there are steps you can take to minimize the chances.
What can you do?
The first step in protecting yourself is to recognize the risks and become familiar with some of the terminology associated with them.
Hacker, attacker, or intruder - These terms are applied to the people who seek to exploit weaknesses in software and computer systems for their own gain. Although their intentions are sometimes fairly benign and motivated solely by curiosity, their actions are typically in violation of the intended use of the systems they are exploiting. The results can range from mere mischief (creating a virus with no intentionally negative impact) to malicious activity (stealing or altering information).
Malicious code - Malicious code, sometimes called malware, is a broad category that includes any code that could be used to attack your computer. Malicious code can have the following characteristics:
◦It might require you to actually do something before it infects your computer. This action could be opening an email attachment or going to a particular web page.
◦Some forms propagate without user intervention and typically start by exploiting a software vulnerability. Once the victim computer has been infected, the malicious code will attempt to find and infect other computers. This code can also propagate via email, websites, or network-based software.
◦Some malicious code claims to be one thing while in fact doing something different behind the scenes. For example, a program that claims it will speed up your computer may actually be sending confidential information to a remote intruder.
Viruses and worms are examples of malicious code.
Vulnerability - In most cases, vulnerabilities are caused by programming errors in software. Attackers might be able to take advantage of these errors to infect your computer, so it is important to apply updates or patches that address known vulnerabilities (see Understanding Patches for more information).

There is the Confickter worm that was supposed to Attack on April 1, 2009 and take over a bunch of systems and what not.
When I was working at Best Buy as a Geek Squad Agent, our supervisors told us to brace ourselves and get ready.
I was ammused at the thought of seeing people lined up from the counter all the way to the door and outside of people not being able to access Facebook, myspace, and World of Warcraft for a while from this.

Cyber terrorism – is the wrongful attacking of computers, networks, or information in order to steal, or intimidate people and their possessions. They can include hackers or cyber spies using malware to hack computers for unlawful purposes.
On darkreading.com I recently learned that a recent government cyber warfare simulation had failed. Former Secretary of Homeland Security Michael Chertoff said that cyber terrorism "ought to be treated as a threat of sufficient seriousness that we give it the priority attention we've given weapons of mass destruction."

The officials said that while Internet addresses have been traced to North Korea, that does not necessarily mean the attack involved the Pyongyang government.
